The procedure
Follicular Unit Extraction moves individual hair follicles from where they grow thickly to where they are needed. Here is what that looks like, practically.
Your doctor maps the donor area — typically the back and sides of the scalp — where follicles are genetically resistant to the hormone that causes pattern hair loss. Individual follicular units are extracted one at a time through tiny circular incisions, then placed into the thinning or balding areas following the natural angle and direction of your existing hair.
There is no scalpel incision, no stitches and no linear scar. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, and most people are back to everyday activities within a few days.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so the treated area is numb throughout. Most people describe the anaesthetic itself as brief discomfort. After the procedure, some mild soreness and swelling is common for a few days, manageable with standard pain relief.
Transplanted hairs typically shed within the first few weeks — this is normal. New growth usually starts around three to four months, with meaningful density from about six months. The full result is generally visible from twelve months, and can continue to improve up to eighteen months.
